I would like to actually know a bit about what is going on in the world, so I'm thinking I should subscribe to some sort of news magazine - one that will hopefully NOT include a sensitive article on Britney's baby or Jessica's new beau. Any recommendations? Time and Newsweek are the only two I can think of. Because I know nothing about anything. Which is also called "ignorance." I'd rather not subscribe to a newspaper since I hate the way it feels, and how the ink turns my fingers gray. I end up splitting my attention between what I'm reading and the shivers going up and down my spine whenever I touch the page.
I didn't go for a walk yesterday, and I almost skipped today as well because I got caught up reading blogs (Curses! DAAAAAMN YOOOOUUUU!). I decided to get a mosey in tonight, but I got off work a little late and wanted to watch "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," which was just starting. I've never seen it before, but I've recently been directed to a couple of his videos on YouTube. He is so forceful and direct in his condemnation of the Bush administration that, after watching the videos, I immediately fell in infatuation. I finally went outside at 9, when the street is as dark as a place with lots and lots of trees and no streetlights. How's THAT for metaphorical? Your eyes are like orbs of color that are genetically determined. *swoon, swoon* So, yeah, I was kind of on edge because I'm always certain that as soon as I feel safe, THAT is when the serial killer will jump out of the bushes. Because, you know, it's totally logical to assume it WON'T happen as long as I don't feel safe.

The Economist. or The Financial Times (no worries, they have other sections as well).
I always wonder how you come up with your blog titles. I actually have a few friends that come up with these interesting titles that don't seem connected to their blogs, and I'm in awe b/c I can't do that.
I love that you post so much. I think we should post daily, if for no one else than each other, b/c we are both faithful commenters...??sp?? on each others' blogs.
I DEFINITELY recommend a subscription to National Geographic. It is not confined to being solely national, nor is it confined to being geographic. Think of it as "INTERnational Geographic, Cultural, Social." I used to have a subscription to Glamour and it started to suck my soul out, so I stopped it, and got National Geographic, and I loved it so much. I already miss it. I want my mom to send me all the issues. I guess I could get a subscription here, couldn't I? I think I'll go look in to that right now. Anyway I love that magazine - beautiful photography, interesting articles on a variety of topics. I definitely felt more informed after that. They do call you sometimes trying to sell you things but you just say no, and hang up. In case you were wondering what to do when they call. Also, the letters to the editor are awesome b/c people get so heated. The audience of national geographic seems to be quite educated and often quite snobby. I guess I must include myself in that but I don't feel THAT educated.
Words that are hard for Japanese people to say:
right
left
available
flower
very
(R's, L's, V's, Z's, G's, F's are all hard letters to pronounce to them. Interesting. I am trying to do my part to remedy this but it's not easy.)
There are more but I'm hungry.
I just looked it up and it would be about 60 dollars for a year's subscription. So...I'd rather make my mom buy them off the stands in the states and mail them to me. That's expensive! It's only like 19$ a year in the states!
I LOVE Smithsonian magazine. But it won't do much to keep you abreast (HA! I said "a breast") of current affairs. My friend Tonia swears by Newsweek, and she's a very, very smart person, so... that's my recommendation. OR you could just find some blogs that will break the political stuff down and spoon feed it to you. That's what I'd do. I like it when people tell me how to feel and what to be indignent about.
My word verification was "flnux," which is very similar to flummox. I think flunnux will be my new word. Definition to follow when I think one up.
Of course that's the right strategy -- everyone knows it always happens when you least expect it, so always be expecting it. ;-)
The only magazine I read regularly is The New Yorker. It has world events and cartoons too!!! ;-)
US News and World Report? It's pretty good.
I like Scientific American, National Geographic and the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I would like to get a subscription to all three with free time to read them all included.
The Nation.
The Economist? Oh god, no! Run away in horror from The Economist! What a load of conservative tripe. My father gave me a subscription to said horrorshow for Chirstmas 2004, explaining his decision to do so by saying, "They endorsed Kerry for president."
To which I replied, "Dad, the freakin National Review, the conservative rag started by William F. Buckley, godfather of contemporary American conservativism, endorsed Kerry for president! Virtually everyone in the whole freakin' world [The Economist is British] realizes that George Bush should not be president!"
So then I got The Economist every freakin' week but couldn't bear to open it. It just started cluttering up my magazine stand and one day I decided to open an issue and saw that letters to the editor all still began with the saluation "Gentlemen."
It's the freakin 21st century and there's still some horrible retro news rag stressing that it's editorial board is male.
So that was it; I had to cancel my subscription. I called the toll-free number and talked to a very nice young woman who had to ask why I was canceling. I explained about the "Gentlemen" thing, adding, "Jesus fucking christ, can't these guys not act like assholes?"
To which she replied, very warmly and sympathetically, "It appears not."
And then I had to explain that it was a gift and ask her not to tell my dad that I was in essence returning his Christmas present.
She had no problem with them and agreed to send me the check for the refund, which was in the neighborhood of 60-70 bucks, and this was late April! If only I had canceled in early January.
Hi Rebecca, I followed a link to you via Self Portrait As.
I'm not certain if this is still available, but The Guardian used to have a weekly edition for North American readers. Subscribers would also get the excellent Le Monde Diplomatique (in English) each month. Even if this combined deal is no longer available, I am sure that if you go to the LMD website it is still possible to subscibe to it directly.
